(Common) Oak Fern is found throughout the state of Michigan, but it is much more common in the north. It is a pretty, lime-green fern that is about 8-12 inches tall.

Oak Fern appears as a whorl of 3 compound leaves but is actually one compound leaf that is triangular in shape and sits parallel to the ground. Sori grow on the edges of the undersides of the pinnules.

This fern likes the shade and cool, moist soil with organic material that drains well. If you’d like to grow this fern, be sure you have its preferences or it will likely disappear from your site.

The frond is divided into leaflets that are wavy on the edges. Sensitive fern emerges and begins to unfurl in the spring forest.
