Plant Lists Based on Conditions
Plant Lists are based on recommendations from Prairie Moon Nursery and Prairie Nursery.
NOTE: I made these lists some time ago. The best way to find this information is to click on “deer resistant” “dry shade” “walnut tolerant” in the shop. That will bring up all of the plants with those labels.
Dry Shade Plants
Important Note: Woodland plants that can tolerate dry shade can do so in a woodland setting. Many of these plants would not do well under a street tree in an urban or suburban setting. Please take this into consideration and read this for more information.
Black walnut trees produce a substance called juglone that is in all parts of the tree including the roots. Some plants are sensitive to this chemical, while other seem to do fine under walnut trees.
Deer Resistant Plants
Important Note: Deer resistance is not the same as rabbit or ground hog resistance. Further, if deer are hungry, they seem to eat most anything, so there is no guarantee that these plants will not be eaten.
