Brome-like Sedge (Carex bromoides)
from $3.50
Brome-like Sedge, also known as Common Brome Sedge, grows where the soil is wet, or at least moist. It can grow in almost any sun conditions as long as moisture is available to the roots. It can grow in the average moisture of a yard.
Brome-like Sedge was a top performer in the Mt. Cuba Sedge Trial for growing in average soil in sun or shade. It did not do well with mowing.
The leaves of this sedge are very fine at about 1 mm across. The perigynia are 5-6 times as long as they are wide, earning them the “brome-like” distinction because the seeds (perigynia/achenes) are long and narrow like many grasses are. The leaves are semi-evergreen
This would be a great sedge to use for matrix planting, where it would be the overall background for the garden and also provide a nice soft-landing for caterpillars.
Companion Plants: sensitive fern, swamp buttercup, wild geranium, cream violet, wild ginger, hairy woodmint
Brome-like Sedge (Carex bromoides)
