Long-stalked Sedge (Carex pedunculata)
from $3.50
Sold Out
Long-stalked Sedge (Carex pedunculata) is a semi-evergreen sedge. In the spring, new leaves grow straight up 6-10” tall. The flowering stems also grow straight up and are short at first but continue growing until they are 18-24” long. This sedge flowers very early in the spring and the seeds form and fall off by mid to late spring. Older leaves flop over and these are the leaves that will overwinter.
The bases of the leaves are red to purple.
Sedges are importantly in the landscape to stabilize soil. I have seen this particular sedge on a lot of hillsides and it tends to grow with Christmas fern. Sedges are also host to some moth and skipper species.
Michigan Flora mentions that this was the first sedge species where ant dispersal of the seed was verified.
Companion Plants: Christmas fern, heart-leaved aster, blue-stemmed goldenrod, common wood rush, wood betony
