Evergreen Wood Fern., also known as Intermediate Wood Fern, is a common fern in deciduous, mixed deciduous and conifer woods, and in coniferous forests and it is found throughout the state of Michigan. As the name indicates, this fern stays green through the winter.

Wood Ferns (genus Dryopteris) are known to hybridize and Evergreen Wood Fern is no exception. This can make identification of the Dryopteris species a challenge! The hybrids that are created have infertile spores.

As with most ferns, this one enjoys moderately moist soil, shade and protection from the wind.
