Up in the northern half of the lower peninsula and in the upper peninsula this time of year, northern heart-leaf aster, or Lindley’s aster, is blooming roadside.
The petioles, or leaf stems of this aster, have wings, which does help set it apart from heart-leaved aster (Symphyotrichum cordifolium), though the latter does sometimes have very small wings.
The flowers of this plant are large, about an inch across, and purple. This helps differentiate it from arrow-leaved aster, which has white flowers.
I prefer this aster to heart-leaved aster (found in the lower half of the lower peninsula) because of its larger flowers. It also tends to stay a bit shorter than heart-leaved aster.
