James’ Sedge (Carex jamesii)

James’ sedge is a short, fine-leaved sedge usually found in moist, rich woodlands. Leaves of this sedge are emerald green and rather dense and it is unusual in that there are usually just 1-3 perigynia per spike (see photos).

This sedge is semi-evergreen and performed well in the shade category of the Mt. Cuba Center’s sedge trial.

I highly recommend this sedge for landscaping as it can tolerate drier conditions, is really beautiful, and has the short stature people are often looking for. If it is in the sun, the leaves will burn a bit, but it still looks nice according to Mt. Cuba Center.
