Male Fern is one of Michigan’s many wood ferns! This is a large fern, reaching 3-5 feet high, that grows out of limestone or other bedrock. If not growing on rock it is usually on steep slopes according to Michigan Flora.
It is found in Michigan at the tip of the mitten and in the Western Upper Peninsula. It is a circumpolar fern that is more common in Europe than in North America. Male Fern is a plant of Special Concern, listed on Michigan Flora.
Male Fern has brown scales on the petioles (part of the stem before the blade starts) and the blades taper on both ends. The leaves are semi-evergreen and the fronds arch elegantly.
