Palm Sedge occurs in wet places in the forest. It can often be found with Gray’s sedge (Carex grayi) and Common Hop Sedge (Carex lupulina)

Palm sedge is part of the oval sedges group—Ovales—which is a notoriously difficult group to ID. Luckily palm sedge is the easiest of them because of its large spikes and long perigynia (see phtos) It also has (new word for me) tristichous leaves, or leaves that are arranged in three vertical rows. So, if you look down from the top of the plant, the leaves are around the stem at 120 degrees from each other. See photos.

Palm sedge grows to 3’ high and does spread by rhizomes.
