Purple-sheathed Graceful Sedge (Carex gracillima)

Purple-sheathed graceful sedge is one of the sedges I lovingly call, the danglers. The “strings” of achenes (seeds) dangle down. Leaves are fairly wide, up to one centimeter. And the bases of the leaves are reddish or purple as the name implies. The achenes are egg shaped.

Another sedge that looks similar is Carex arctata, drooping woodland sedge. It can occur in the same habitats as well. Drooping woodland sedge can be differentiated from purple-sheathed graceful sedge in that is has longer scales and the perigynia have a long pointed beak. The overall look of the seeds in Carex gracillima seeds is rounded. Carex arctata seeds are pointy.

This sedge is found in rich woods all throughout the state of Michigan.

All of the “dangler sedges” are lovely in my opinion. They would be a lovely addition to any woodland garden to provide a different texture for human eyes and to provide shelter for critters.
