Sweet Joe Pye Weed (also known as Sweet Scented Joe Pye Weed) grows in rich forests and floodplain forests. Whereas Spotted Joe Pye Weed (Eutrochium maculatum) is usually found in large groups of plants out in the sun, Sweet Joe Pye Weedis usually in small groups in the shade; it can also grow in part sun. The florets are also a paler pink in Sweet Joe Pye Weed. Sweet Joe Pyeweed also has only 3-5 leaves per whorl in mature plants.

Another plant in the genus Eutrochium is rare in southern Michigan. It is Hollow Stem Joe Pye Weed and it also grows in the sun (and up to 10 feet tall!).

Several moths use this plant as host plant for their caterpillars and the nectar feds butterflies, skippers, and moths as well as long-tongued bees. Birds may eat the seeds to some extent.
