Tuckerman’s Sedge (Carex tuckermanii)
Tuckerman’s Sedge is a handsome sedge that tends to be found in wet woods. It grows in areas near vernal ponds, near streams and in wet meadows. It can even grow in standing water, if that water is temporary.
This sedge grows to about 2 feet or a bit taller. The flowering stems may be weighed down by the developing perigynia. Perigynia are large and have indented veins. The achenes (seeds) are uniquely shaped for a sedge. I don’t currently have a photo of this, but hope to update this season. The large perigynia float on water. The leaves are about half a centimeter wide.
