Wild Leek (Allium tricoccum)

from $6.50
Sold Out

We’re excited to offer wild leeks grown from seed for sale!

Our first batch of just a few plants are five years old, so they may flower soon. They are priced higher than subsequent plants will be. Our just-germinated plants are likely too small to sell this year (2026), so keep this in mind.

Wild Leeks are in danger in the wild due to over harvesting of the bulbs. The proper way to forage for leeks (if at all!) is to find the plants that have more than one leaf and harvest one or part of one leaf. Better yet, buy our leeks grown from seed and enjoy them year over year.

Leeks can be found in rich forests throughout the state. There are two species in Michigan. The other, Allium burdickii, has narrow leaves and white bases, whereas Allium tricoccum has wide leaves and reddish bases.

Leek leaves are ephemeral and are replaced by a white globe of flowers in July and August. Once pollinated, the black seeds form under vegetative cover which dries and opens displaying shiny, spherical seeds.

Companion Plants: Trillium, Bishop’s cap, Michigan lily, Virginia spring beauty, Dutchman’s breeches, big leaf aster, plantain leaf sedge, Christmas fern, bellwort
