Long-awned Wood Grass (Brachyelytrum erectum)
from $3.50
Sold Out
Long-awned wood grass is native to the southern part of the state of Michigan in rich woods as well as oak-hickory forests. It is found in high quality sites where not much disturbance has occurred.
Long-awned wood grass is an attractive plant, especially in a small grouping. The leaves are at a 90-degree angle from the stem, giving a somewhat tailored look to it. It flowers in the summer and is wind-pollinated, like most grasses and sedges. Once seeds are formed it has a very distinctive look due to the long awns attached to the seeds ( see photos). These long awns can attach to animal fur and so may be spread in this way.
Long-awned wood grass can spread by rhizome. It is a host plant of the northern pearly eye butterfly.
Companion Plants: early meadow rue, sarsaparilla, hog peanut, big leaf aster, wild geranium, woodland sunflower, blue-stemmed goldenrod, yellow pimpernel
